Mansfield High School Band Director
Matt McGuire has been active as an educator in the marching and concert percussion activity for more than ten years. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2007 where he studied percussion with Mike Mangini, Ed Saindon, Richard Flanagan, and Nancy Zeltsman. While at Berklee, Matt also studied music education, arranging, and composition. He performed with many of Berklee’s prestigious ensembles as well as with his own bands and quartets performing professionally in the Boston area.
He served as the assistant band director, percussion director, and percussion arranger for the award winning Bishop Feehan High School Marching Band and indoor percussion program from 2006-2010, and he is currently the percussion director, arranger, and is on the show design team at Bishop Feehan. In 2006 Matt was on the percussion staff for The East Coast Jazz Drum and Bugle Corps. That year they took the Silver Medal at DCI World Championships and Won the High Percussion Award for Division II. In 2008 Matt was on percussion staff with the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps, who won the Open Class Bronze Medal at DCI World Championships. Most recently, Matt was the front ensemble arranger and lead technician for the Citations Drum and Bugle Corps, helping to capture the DCI Open Class Bronze Medal in 2009.
In 2002, Matt started teaching the concert percussion ensemble at Mansfield High School. Since then he has taken on the role of Percussion Ensemble Director and Arranger. In 2007 the ensemble won their first WGI Concert Open Class World Championship and in 2008 the ensemble received a near perfect score in NESBA capturing their first ever NESBA indoor percussion championship, and for a second year in a row won WGI’s concert open class world championship, also setting a scoring record, which until recently was the highest score ever achieved in WGI Indoor Percussion. In 2012, Matt led the percussion ensemble to a finalist berth in the Scholastic Marching A Class and in the same year led the Indoor Concert Ensemble to a Silver Medal in WGI’s Concert Open Class, making Mansfield one of the few groups in WGI history to have two groups in finals in the same year.
In 2007, Matt took over as band director and choir director for Qualters Middle School in Mansfield Ma, and after one year in that position he moved into a role in the performing arts department at Mansfield High School. While in Mansfield, in addition to directing the percussion program, Matt has also conducted award winning Middle School Wind Ensemble and, more recently, the award winning High School Wind Ensemble. Matt annually conducts the spring musical, which has included Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of Penzance, Once on this Island, Into the Woods, and West Side Story. Matt is a highly sought after arranger for numerous high school bands and percussion programs across the country and has adjudicated in Connecticut’s MAC Marching Band Circuit. Matt is proudly a member of the Vic Firth Education Program.
